For some where-the-rubber-meets-the-road practical guidelines,
"Thinking Visually: Business Applications of 14 Core Diagrams" by
Malcolm Craig.

For conceptual background on visual design to convey information,
everything that Edward Tufte has ever published on that subject,
starting with "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information."
