I do have a lot of BA skills and I have developed them for many years, but I
guess I underestimated the value of those skills. I won't pursue PMP
certification because I don't want the job that goes with it, but maybe I
will look at a BA re-direction. Straight documentation bores me.

A real business analyst is much in demand as a project management
professional (PMP). It is much more sophisticated than requirements
engineering and documentation. BA's have special skills with project
management, workflow processes, business modeling, and software such as UML
(uniform modeling language), use cases, entity-relationship diagrams
(ERDs) and relational database concepts, object-oriented technologies
(Rational Rose, object-oriented analysis, object-oriented design,
object-oriented programming), and the systems development lifecycle (SDLC).

Documentation and Visio expertise won't even get you in the door.
However, having BA skills, such as requirements engineering, workflow
processing, process modeling, use-case writing, and some other
documentation-related tools can augment technical writing, and you can
legitimately tilt your resume in that direction--if you can satisfactorily
substantiate your accomplishments and achievements.

The above is based on my having worked extensively and closely with BA's and
doing documentation within their framework of tasks.

...and here comes the traditional TW answer: it depends.

Have you got a solid portfolio of work in which you functioned as a BA to
help a company solve some serious problems and increase their profitability?
By all means, feature it!

Do you love leading the charge and saving the day? And having your head be
the one to roll if it doesn't all come together?

Or do you relish designing and creating good, functional documents that
actually help people who are slogging their the daily slop, out of sight and
smell of Upper Management? If that's the case, downplay the BA stuff and
stick to tech writing.
