Marsha Kamish wondered: <<Does anyone think it's any different?>>
All documentation groups face the same kinds of issues (e.g., gaining
access to SMEs, editorial and technical reviews, learning about
schedules, gaining representation with management, exerting some
influence on produce or process design), but the details can be quite
different. For example, if you're doing environmental safety or
worker health work, you'll be working under a range of legal
(regulatory) constraints that most software writers never face.
So the trick is to spend some time learning about the specific
constraints that will affect you in your new role, and start thinking
about how to live under those constraints -- or possibly even change
the constraints.
