Ah, the leavetakings.

I was once called in by my agency "to talk about your overdue cost of living
increase". As soon as I arrived they took my card key and informed me the
project was finished. My rep was sent in to clean out my desk.

Another place gave me permission to plan on working at home the day after a
big snowstorm (took me four hours to make the 30-mile drive), then informed
me by e-mail that the project was ended and would I please bring back all
company material (on my own time) as soon as the driving ban was lifted.

I don't remember if I received any severance or not. They were both
contract jobs so I'm thinking not.

I don't trust any employer to keep their promises. My baggage, nothing to
do with them. And I still whenever at all possible give two weeks' notice.
Just because they can be whoever they choose to be and I am who I choose to
be. I keep promises.

I have given two weeks' notice and been summarily escorted from the
building. This is life in the computer age, it's jarring but pretty
standard. I try to negotiate a good enough salary that I'll be able to keep
a two-week slush fund in case this happens again.

Nobody has ever dared to physically touch me in the leavetaking process.

Of course, I am now in my dream job and plan to be here forever.
