I use the term external removable storage device. The first time I use
this term, I place examples after it.

Insert the external removable storage device (thumb drive, USB drive,
flash drive, or so on).

All other references are to the external removal storage device.

Hi,

I call them portable USB drives. However, thumb drive and flash drive
are common names. I've heard jump drive, also, but that makes me think
of a science fiction television series.

I'd introduce the term you want to use and note the alternative names in
parentheses, and proceed using your term of choice repeatably and
reliably. When you create the index, teach your reader by using "See USB
drive" (or whatever term you standardize on) for entries for the
synonyms.

Cheers,

Sean

P.S. Well, isn't that "doomom" or "dooperson" and not "doodad"?
"Doohickey," isn't that a "dooneckbruise"?

I need to refer to use of a flash drive / USB drive / thumb drive.
.
Is there a standard term for these ubiquitous doohickeys?
