I remember the magical "appears" surfacing about 20 yrs ago at IBM, when
they were going through a big translation concentration. I think I remember
that the problem wasn't in the English connotations, but in the connotations
of potential translations.

Or ... It could be an Urban Legend.

appears that doesn't involve knocking appears for being "magical". I've
never heard a user of my documentation make that claim, only another Tech
Writer. It would be interesting to track down where the "magical appears"
claim first surfaced.
