In my view, Microsoft should stay out of the authoring
tools market with Office. They need to either develop
a specialized product, or get out. My view is that
they will create an intermediate solution in Office,
and probably integrate something DITA-ish into Word,
and finally spin it off as part of their SharePoint
package.

I would like to see a continuation of the FrameMaker
paradigm with some updates. I don't think the task has
changed that much at all. Maybe this is cynicism, but
over the years, little has really changed in computing
as regards the tasks that need to be performed. It's
the same basic job, and tools go through trends, but
having some kind of market leader helps.

Microsoft's ideal position would be to have separate
toolsets for the SOHO/home and corporate worlds, and
to therefore save some of the professionals from the
catch-all tools like Word.

I'm not advocating a Microsoft approach, but I know
their mentality, which is that unless they have a
presence in each and every area of software, they feel
vulnerable. I'm not certain how well that will serve
them in the long run, and I think they're missing out
on some of the bigger areas (enterprise apps) that
have come along recently.
