Ed: This refers to font metrics (design, shape, size): a different italic
angle or amount of leading. Each version of Windows, 95, 98, NT, XP, XPsp1,
has its own set of individual fonts that are just different enough from its
predecessor to create font matching issues. For example, the font Arial was
different for each of NT3.0, NT3.5, NT3.51, NT4.0, NT4.0 sp4, NT4.0 sp6.
Yes, slightly differently designed fonts for 8 versions of NT. The
differences are not noticeable on the printed page, but are different enough
that it is not a true match. Font differences were considered to be
encouragment for upgrading to the latest version of Win.

The solution is to copy the font folder of each of the Win versions into
appropriately named separate folders on a local or network drive. Add
another folder for those unusual fonts that folks sometimes use. Then map
your publishing program and Acrobat distiller to all these folders.
Voila! When you get a file from someone using a slightly different font,
then you already have it available and no more error messages.

We don't notice this problem much these days since XP has been around so
long. But when you had to accept files from a dozen different systems, it
was a serious headache.

There is a good explanation of font metrics here

I really don't know any details on "codes," this is what a
tech at Adobe told me about why our FM kept giving us
missing font messages when we opened files that were
made on other users' systems. It turned out that the
fonts on some users' systems were being identified
differently from same-named fonts on other users'
systems because their id had been hijacked by fonts
with completely different names. I presumed that he
was referring to some bit of hex conde in the fonts
that distinguished versions of fonts by different makers.
But once we had some guidance on how to make it
work right again I lost interest in finding out more.
