"Know thy audience" doesn't mean "ask them what they think they need and
give that and only that to them whether they need it or not".

"Know thy audience" means understanding the different groups that make
up your audience. What tasks do they have to do? How is their success
measured? What environments do they work in? What do they already know?
What do they need to know? When do they need to know it?

You don't figure out what people need through testing, you figure it out
through analysis. At best, testing reveals how well your proposed
solution meets the needs you've already identified.
