Not sure I'm completely convinced on Point 1 (or that I need to be). But
Points 2 and 3 make very good sense. I inherited the Fig_X system (right
down to the memo from the head of engineering directing it), but this
thread definitely points to a better way. We've got the unique
identifiers without the Fig_X stuff. So who needs it? Just another
evidence that time on this list is often well spent.

I *totally* agree about avoiding filenames that include the figure
number. In the first place, it inherently denies the possibility that
the file might be used in more than one publication or more than one
context. Second, it really adds very little informational value. And
third, if you add or delete a figure you render most (or all) of the
existing filenames inaccurate.
