I'm not absolutely sure about this, but it could be that your cropped/compressed graphics are behaving like embedded OLE objects. I've experienced somewhat similar situations with embedded Excel tables where, after dragging the embedded object's window borders to show a desired portion of the table, the size of the embedded table would enlarge. I've usually been able to fix this kind of problem, but it often required my starting from scratch by re-embedding the object (recopying and pasting, etc.). I've also always attributed this issue to a somewhat buggy application's response to a certain set of "less-than-ideal" conditions.
Know that probably doesn't help much and may not be the issue in your case.
Personally, I think the best way to go with images (as already suggested) is manipulating them in an external graphics app and then inserting them by reference.
