Kind of along the same lines is the handwritten note I took while
attending the Michael Hughes session called "A Pattern Language Approach
to User Assistance" at WinWriters 2007:

"Don't write for the lowest common denominator. Write for the person
that is almost smart enough to use the product without user assistance."

I think it makes sense to say that we write our documentation from the
perspective of someone who knows the minimum possible to still use the
project, and is distracted and in a chaotic environment so requires
simple statements. In psychological terms, we are looking for someone
whose capacity to infer is as limited as his or her knowledge.

Create HTML or Microsoft Word content and convert to Help file formats or
printed documentation. Features include support for Windows Vista & 2007
Microsoft Office, team authoring, plus more.

True single source, conditional content, PDF export, modular help.
Help & Manual is the most powerful authoring tool for technical
documentation. Boost your productivity!
