There was an article in The Australian (newspaper) about the potential
supernova Eta Carinae, putting it 70.8 trillion kilometres from the Sun.
Depending on whether this was the traditional British trillion (10^^18)
or the more common 10^^12, this would have Eta Car ticking away either 7
million light-years or 7 light years away--a very important difference
to us if the thing actually goes off in the near future.

Eta Carinae is actually about 7,500 light-years from us.

I wrote to the paper's feedback e-mail and the reply was along the lines
that "it came from the AP Wire Service...nothing to do with us", as
though they wouldn't or couldn't check and correct agency articles.

I'm sure there was another agency article in the paper the previous week
that made the same error in magnitude when dealing with trillions.
