There is such a thing as a "toxic team." Teams are as susceptible to
becoming stale, self-referential, unproductive, and even
counterproductive as individuals are. Arguably, the most common
danger long-standing teams risk is self-norming groupthink.
Irrespective of the issue of hiring the particular job candidate in
question, the team -- and especially the team leader -- should take
this incident as a fortuitous signal that the team needs to be
re-formed and re-normed around work-related mission and objectives in
order to promote the best personal and group outcomes.
