In my company, our Engineering VP recently announced to our department
(which includes about 35 people, including doc and QA), that if we are not
working 55 hours a week, we are not doing our jobs. This came a few months
after this same exec got rid of 75% of our writing staff, leaving only me.
My direct manager, meanwhile, who has never been seen in the office later
than 5:30, says, "Oh, disregard what the VP says; just work whatever you
think is a normal week."
It's very confusing. As a result, I've been working 45 hours or so but am
somewhat nervous about failing to live up to the 55-hour a week standard,
especially when there's so much pending doc work.
For a while I worked really crazy hours (60-70 hours) because I
was displeased about the many doc needs that were going unmet. But then I
got burned out.
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that out there... I want to work with
Sarah!
