Yes, I do think that because society places a much higher emotional
investment in children (hence the "flex time" for soccer games, dance
class and other after school activities beginning long before most of us
get off work) than society places on pet ownership. A lot of people
would say that's the way it should be but that's a topic for another
list and not this one.
So, let's not go there.

So you think if the doggie-loving manager asked if there
was someone in the group who'd be willing to stay later
in the work day and have a correspondingly later start
time on a regular basis there's no possibility that someone
might think that sounded good?

I too was a benign dictator both as a manager and as a college-level
instructor. Definitely not a democracy. I did expect my staff to pick up
responsibilities I was too busy to do (attending endless meetings that
my staff did not want to attend) but I can't imagine asking them to stay
later than me unless I had an emergency. BUT, as I said before, I am
happily single and childfree although I do have to pick up my dog
occasionally from doggie-day care.

Can you imagine this: a manager asking a staff member to stay late
regularly so the manager could pick up the dog at doggie day care? No.
Wouldn't fly.
