Copernic works great for me. One reason I chose it was that Google
Desktop Search is practically useless without the Internet: You can't
set user preferences and you can only see partial results, even from a
*local* file search.

Copernic, OTOH, is fully functional without the Internet. As far as I'm
concerned, that means more privacy and security.
