I agree with Carla that visual instructions are not useful in every
case. My classic example is router configuration. You show a stick
figure unpacking a routing, plugging in a router, and then 2500 panels
of the same stick figure typing...

However, I think it's possible to achieve a standardized visual
language of sorts. At least, by the fifth piece of Ikea furniture you
set up, the "language" of their figurines starts to make sense. It's an
alarming moment.
