Carol,

I translate German/Dutch/French to English as a freelancer, and manage

the English to French/German/Danish/Dutch localizations for my
employer.

The best advice I can probably give is to go to the Microsoft developer
site
and download the translation glossary for French. The glossaries are
large, but a free
download. If you want to make this more structural, buy a copy of
WinLex so
that you can have a useful search interface (the original files are
Excel
spreadsheets). A lot of Microsoft's translations are really stupid and
the
glossaries are full of dumb mistakes and typos, but they are a good
source
for standard phrases like button captions and, errors and all, they are
a sort
of de facto industry standard.

There is also a much smaller and more modern combined glossary for
all the languages (they claim 12,000 terms in 59 languages) at:

http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/MILSGlossary.mspx

Hope this helps,

Simon
