DITA - how to start?

Rob Hudson wondered: <<I'm sure this question has been asked many  
times, but as a new PhD student and "old" documenter, I'm wondering  
about foundational resources and readings for both DITA theory and  
DITA applicaiton.>>

There's a really good article on this in the latest issue of STC's  
_Intercom_ magazine. It doesn't go into tools in any detail, but does  
a better job explaining the core concepts than most of what I've read  
in recent years. I suspect that if you wrote the author and asked for  
a Tools follow-up, you'd get another article equally good.
