Hello,

one issue i might point out is the difference between 1) unpublished
documents and 2) revised, released documents submitted for
publication, and 3), published documents that have been through an
editor. i believe copyright law applies to all three. so that it is
not legal to take content from 1) or 2) without quoting and crediting
the author.

document release dates apply in all three cases, for internal
documents as well as external documents. version or authority control
of the versions is the legal property of the author. i believe in
corporate environments this is the standard for technical documents
with copy that is generated in-house.

best,

heidi

PDF files are delivered on software CDs and updated PDF files are posted on the customer portal page of our website. Document control version indicators are absent.

For one thing, if a customer prints the manual, they may not want to visit our customer portal to check the date, and they won't even have a way to confirm a match or mismatch without knowing what the differences are. (Document control is another matter for another day.)

The idea of a date or other control indicator on every page was rejected.

For example, an "ABC User Manual" created today would say "Published September 5, 2007" and an updated "ABC User Manual" (or "ABC User Guide") created a month from now would say "Published October 5, 2007" with no indication that the document is a revision.
