Al Geist notes: <<I have two computer systems. Both run XP Pro and MS
Office Pro 2003. In one Word document, the cross references are
highlighted with a light gray background. In the other, they are not
highlighted. The Tool Options are identical on both systems as are
the Tool Customize selections. I want the cross references to be
highlighted on both systems to make editing easier.>>

I'm not using Word 2003, but based on previous versions, odds are
excellent you'll find what you're looking for in the Options
(Preferences on the Mac) dialog box, on the View tab. Look for two
settings: the checkbox for "Field Codes", and the dropdown menu for
"Field shading". Mine is set to "Always", and I get the grey shading
you report.

There's also a "Highlight" checkbox that may serve this function in
later versions, and 2003 may have added some additional view options
worth checking.
