Some engineers and scientists are seriously creative, funny (and/or messed
up)...I can easily imagine that FQDN was created specifically to cause
this kind of pronunciation and controversy.

Look at other terms in the list at and tell me they don't evoke
other non-computer meanings:

"hot swap"
"Slot 1"

Consider the name "signed" on a famous hoax about raising money
for cancer or somesuch-- "Jessica Mydek."
