Well said, Bill. And there are probably many, also, who thrive on the
hands-on work they do and do not see (or, at least, do not wish to see)
arriving in management as the necessary pinnacle of their career paths
and accomplishments.

I shudder every time I hear of 'manager' being in the promotion path for
any position. Being a manager requires a very different skill set, and a
technical path - even a writing path - does not prepare someone for
management. It *can* with the right training along the way, but no one
should ever be or expect to be promoted into management based on
excelling in a technical role alone.
