Before anyone thinks I'm HR-bashing, I have worked with some truly 
wonderful HR people over the years.

The sudden departure of supportive HR people can be one of the early 
warning signs that you may not want to stick around a company for very 
much longer.  One of the first things companies do when things start to 
turn downward is shop for new HR people who are better able to implement 
draconian cost-cutting policies and throw people overboard at a moment's 
notice.
