If you're a hands-on working manager, having people
working substantially longer hours than you are just
makes you look bad all around. And I don't like to
work 80 hour weeks any more than anyone else does.

At my current company, when I came aboard one of
the questions I asked about general procedure was
what the process was to track employee hours, vacation,
etc. The reply was, "I guess if we hire very many more
people we're going to have to start keeping track of that

My boss occasionally (but rarely) needs me for more
than eight hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. I
occasionally need to come in late, leave early, or
even take a day not counted as vacation. We are
both considerate of each other, and we both make
an effort to keep the exchange even. It's working
because we treat each other with respect.
