Pete,
That was it (almost)!
The error messages were not in the log, and the files were in my
system32 direction. But I followed the instructions given in the link
you forwarded anyway. Now, I can use the Search tab to get results, but
a remnant of the "No topics found" window flashes before my eyes before
giving me the results.

Weird.

Thanks for the tip, though. Maybe next time I reboot we'll see a change.

One of the more common reasons for the failure of the search function is
that the file itcc.dll is missing or incorrectly registered on your
build
machine. This file is loaded by the compiler at the point that the
full-text
search "database" for the help file is being assembled.

If you see either of the following error messages when you compile, you
need
to reregister itcc.dll, and maybe itircl.dll as well.

HHC6002: The file itcc.dll has not been registered correctly.
HHC6003: The file itircl.dll has not been registered correctly.
