For some nouns, there are plural/singular differences in US/UK usage.

Examples:
US: "The orchestra is on the stage."
UK: "The orchestra are on the stage."

US: "EMI is about to release the CD."
UK" "EMI are about to release the CD."

I've seen the above UK examples in a UK publication, and they stuck in
my mind... Very odd sounding to an American!
