Mike Bell, CEO of Software.com, an online buyers guide, (says) "Our view is
that consumers are not that particular," Bell said. "They would rather hear
firsthand accounts from a (software) user, even if the quality is not that
high."

Back when I freelanced full-time to magazines, a significant number of
editors bought material based on cost versus quality and their publication
showed it. Even when I was trying to build a portfolio, I stayed away from
those types of publications. (It would be like saying you're a journalist
and writing for one The Enquirer.)
People will still write for Bell, but not because they are building a
career. Being published is one thing. Being proud of what was published is
something entirely different. When you get published at a website that
doesn't even have the wherewithal to do a cursory edit, the long-term damage
you do to your career is not worth the immediate gratification of beer
money.
