This is potentially an even stickier problem for companies
like Sun than the paid by hour/salary issue, because at
most technical writers in the "computer software field" are
excluded. Technical writers who document aircraft engines,
pharmaceuticals or telecommunications consoles and not
software would not be excluded even if software technical
writers are. Now, some of us could probably live with the
idea that software writers are less "technical" than those
of us who write about things made of titanium and carbon
composite plastics, but for a company like Sun that makes
workstations, servers and software, is Mary, who writes
installation and service manuals for rackmounted servers,
an exempt professional employee while Bob, who writes
software manuals, is a nonexempt clerical employee?
