Gene Kim-Eng noted: <<I can't think of ANYTHING that the STC has ever
done that could remotely be considered "charitable work." If the
organization is refraining from any activity or policy decisons about
anything based on its desire to be considered a charitable group for
tax purposes, that would be the thing that pushes me over the line to
letting my membership go for good.>>

STC makes no claims to be a charity in the sense that (say) Oxfam or
Heifer International is a charity. Specifically: "STC is recognized
as an educational organization as described in Section 501 (c)(3) and
Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code."

This means nothing more than that STC is a not-for-profit
organization, and lumped in with a bunch of other odd ducks under a
specific IRS tax category. The not-for-profit part is the key thing,
and it grants them favorable tax status. You don't really need to
analyze it more deeply than that.
