I'm in an IT-ish sort of job (defense systems) so there must be a few
jobs left in IT. On the other hand, in the NJ-PA-DE area there is a
large concentration of medical writer openings. Long-range, I'd have
to ask you what geo area are you interested in? For instance, Silicon
Valley means something much different than Texas, as far as the type
of jobs offered now, and later.

I like your idea of database and programming focus. That will give you
backgorund skills that many writers don't have.

I'm thinking of picking up certificates in programming, database design and administration, and advanced web design along the way. Does this sound like a good idea? I was advised to focus in a technical area so I chose IT instead of say, health management. Now I'm having doubts and second thoughts about the viability of my choice and whether I'm learning what I should be. I'm just getting my feet wet in the industry again so I'm not as familiar with it as I was ten or even five years ago.
