Here's an interesting site that cites the invention of the slide rule in
1625 as a starting point for the history of IT.

That's debatable. I would have thought the invention of the pocket protector
worthy of a mention.

But anyway, from a cursory reading it is clear that by the 1950s we were
well into IT as we would recognize it today.
