Word automatically rebuilds a default normal.dot file when it's opened, so
there is no need to back it up.

Yikes. I think there should be a note to back-up Normal.dot in location
away from the templates folder so that it can be re-built if necessary.
Otherwise, everything else Deborah says sounds right.

I have had the "can't select or copy" issue, but it was years ago and the
fix then was to either restart Word or reboot my system; I don't recall
which. I think the problem was related to some form of graphics memory or
other memory issue on a work machine.
