Actually, I was a member of a writers' discussion group long ago -- a
group that I actually helped form. I was also a member of an online
critiquing group for awhile. Alas, that's where I got a lot of the
negative feedback about unsympathetic characters, although some of it
also came from editors of small-press magazines.

I would suggest joining a local writers' group. That's what I did. That
can help a lot. My submissions -- short stories and read-aloud musings
-- have gotten good reviews from the group members. I have already been
asked if I have ever tried publishing anything. The answer is no. But
the positive feedback has been very encouraging.
