Hi Morgan,

No, you don't need to understand data structures to be a successful
technical writer. If a specific tech writing job requires knowledge that
you don't think you can acquire, don't apply for it.

Karen's original point stands: All technical knowledge is potentially
useful for beginning tech writers, so learn as much as you can. Besides,
learning is fun for its own sake. However, there's no specific technical
knowledge that's required for all tech writing jobs.
