If you are really worried about the data on the hard drive of a computer you
are selling, donating, or otherwise disposing, replace the hard drive.
They're pretty cheap these days and that would solve your security worries.
If your new system is a desktop, use the old hard drive in it. If you don't
have room, or if you new system is a laptop, you can get a hard drive
enclosure and still use it. Most come with USB 2.0 ports making it easy to
link them to your new system. Then you won't have to worry about someone
seeing your old Quicken stuff and finding out how far beyond your means you
are really living.
