It's been a long time since I was a salaried employee, but I would be very uncomfortable to work regular unpaid overtime--in other words, unfixed hours for a fixed salary. In effect you're saying to the boss, "You can have 40 hours that you have to pay for, then zero or more hours for free." It can work if you have a trustworthy, flexible employer, but I wouldn't want to rely on every boss to do the right thing.

I like working as a contractor on a hourly rate. I know how much I'm getting paid for each hour I work and I make sure I work for each hour I get paid. Both parties know what they're getting and can do their sums in advance.
