The time to start networking is before you lose your job

I've heard from several former co-workers in the past couple of weeks
who have started networking after being laid off or having their hours
cut. All of my mailing lists have posts asking for and dispensing job
hunting advice. Yesterday I had an IM from someone who has been
looking for work for four months and was just setting up their
LinkedIn account and adding connections.

So, I just thought now would be a good time to remind people that the
time to network is *before* you lose your job. I pop into LinkedIn
every week or two to see if I can find one or two more people to add
to my network. I send the occasional "What are you up to?" e-mail to
my closest friends from previous jobs, just to keep in touch. I
always reply when former coworkers IM me, even if it's only to chat
for a few minutes before begging off to attend a meeting (real or
imaginary). There are plenty of social networking tools out there
(LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace, blogs) that you can use to job hunt.
The trick is, to build up your network before you need it.

Probably stating the obvious, but that's my specialty. ;-)
