There already are boards that let you use a pen and you don't block the
projection. The Smart Board from Smart Technologies lets you write on the
screen using special "markers" or your finger and they work really well.

These boards are very common in schools these days (my wife works for the
local school board and was involved in a roll out of a large number of them
last year).
