If it had been written as "twenty years has taught me" I would have
assumed that it really meant "twenty years' experience," which was why I
said it would have *suggested" a meaning to me rather than that was what
it would have said.

But since it was written as "twenty years have taught me" in the first
place, there was no need for me to make any assumptions or take any
suggestions, was there?
