This is exactly what I've been writing about on my own blog, Barataria, for the last few months - http://erikhare.wordpress.com I agree completely.

In hard times like these, people find that they have to think about things they never thought they'd have to think about. The role of a writer is to make the connections that they are having trouble making. Often that comes down to providing a perspective where the connections between things are more obvious so that the reader can make up his or her own mind.

I also see a lot more need for good technical writing of the "strong half-step back" variety - the way things work, starting from basic principles. I hope I can find some kind of employment in this area someday.
