John is correct, but I would add that I use that basic information to
improve my website and the websites of my customers. I don't care who the
person was that visited the site, but I do want to know the browser they
used, the keywords they used, the pages they visited, and so on. It's the
same information web developers have been using for years to make the WWW
bigger, faster, and more responsive to visitors. Collecting other
information to make your personal visit to a website more "personable," such
as what is done by Amazon, is another thing altogether. I believe that what
Sharon was talking about was the former, but others are arguing about the
latter. Collecting any "personal" information without consent is wrong,
because it invades your privacy. Collecting basic visitor information is
different, because it doesn't invade your personal privacy.
