I never have any troubles doing stuff like this because I pretend
everything is Unix (or Linux) by using cygwin when it isn't. Cygwin
presents a Unix-like command-line environment on Windows. It is free and
can be installed on any modern Windows system including XP.

My advantage with cygwin is that I've known the Unix commands since Bell
Labs version 6 (a long time ago). There is almost no need for me to
think about the DOS commands.
