I haven't ever seen a controversy about the spelling
and not sure why "ya'll" would be defensible given
that the apostrophe is in place of missing letters,
which in this case would be for the rest of "you"

True, but I don't think I've usually heard it used
directly to a singular person. I completely agree
that it can be used for inanimate objects, and that
"all y'all" is the intensifier form.
