If you have the time, read Bringhurst's "Elements of Typographic Style". A
great book on the subject.

I've heard good things about Robin Williams' Non-Designer's Design book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0321534042/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=48
6539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1566091594&pf_rd_m=ATVP
DKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=14CPRM85SZN1MPGCT1XS

If you have the resources, I'd invest in an OpenType font family, and use
them instead of standard Windows/Word fonts. Even better would be one
sans-serif family, and one serif family. Traditionally, sans-serif are used
for headings, and serif for body type, but that no longer seems to be a
hard-and-fast rule.

I can't find any specific online resources in my bookmarks, but I'd be
willing to bet Adobe's site will have a wealth of knowledge.

Hope this helps.
