Back in the 1960s a group of us worked with the PDP-8, a minicomputer
with a display of 12 lights, corresponding to the contents of an
internal 12-bit register. Despite the fact that we had real work to
do, we often spent time devising programs that produced interesting
patterns in those lights.
My DSL modem and my router have interesting and informative light
displays, each of only a few bits.
A four-character display could certainly be quite expressive. ...RM
