Please excuse last partially written email! I do save often, and realise that it's not an ideal solution. Ideally I'd like to augment the version number every time I create a PDF for sending to a customer. But I reckoned that would involve me remembering to do that manually - which is never a good thing! I need something automated. Many thanks for the suggestions. I can't see my work paying for any more software, or hiring anyone to do it though! But you never know.

Really? Every time you save? Are you sure? You save every 15-20 minutes, don't you?
If you really, really want to do this, you can script it with FrameScript. Or hire Rick Quatro (frameexpert.com) to script it for you (you'll still need to get FrameScript).
