Subject:Re: Paper vs. Electronic From:Pro TechWriter <pro -dot- techwriter -at- gmail -dot- com> To:Richard Melanson <rmelanson -at- spirecorp -dot- com> Date:Wed, 6 Oct 2010 12:55:50 -0500
I haven't worked anywhere that sent paper copies of manuals since about
1990. All of the help systems I have produced have been online help with a
copy of the manual (output from the Help tool) in Adobe Acrobat PDF format
on the CD and available from a documentation page on our web site.
Software companies are not printing companies :-)
We did some analysis on cost of sending paper versus not sending paper, and
the amount of money saved for "not" was startling! That might be a good
place to start. Don't forget to add labor cost (salary + benefits dollar
amount. Benefits are usually figured at 30-35% of your salary.)
Best,
PT
