If you're working with an organization that does software, they probably
have a software source control system like Subversion (SVN), CVS, GIT,
or Mercurial. Any one of them will do the job reasonably well (though
CVS is getting a bit long in the tooth), and all are open source.
Getting connected in with an existing source control system will save
you the trouble of setting up something new, and someone else will be
responsible for maintenance and backups:). But, if there is no existing
system, setting one up isn't too hard. If you're on windows, I'd
probably look at svnserve and the TortoiseSVN (svnserve is a lightweight
svn server and TortoiseSVN is a Windows client for SVN that cleanly
integrates source control into the windows interface).
